Five AKS hockey teams enjoyed some very close and exciting games against the strong Altrincham Grammar School with all teams showing how they have improved from the start of the season with honours even with two wins and a draw a piece, the highlight of which was the U12’s 9 – 0 victory.
AKS Senior XI 1 - 1 Altrincham Senior XI Scorer: Mollie M POM: Sally S
With Altrincham unable to field a first team a combined senior side included Yr 12 , 11 & 10 players took to the field against a strong Altrincham U16 side. Understandably we took a while to get organised and Altrincham capitalised on our indecision to score in the 2nd minute of the game. Altrincham attacked at pace and only good defending from Farrah D, Lily H, Hannah B and Amy I stopped Altrincham increasing their lead. They did come close in the 17th minute but we were starting to get a grip on the game and good work in midfield from Grace W saw her create an opportunity for Lucy R but her shot was well saved by the keeper. We got reward for our improved play just before the break when a great move which started with Hannah B at left defence feeding the ball to Grace W. Her driving run and pass found Mollie M in the circle and her clever early reverse push deceived the keeper to find the net and draw us level at 1 – 1 on the stroke of half time.
The second half saw Altrincham again start well and force several corners but superb corner defence and a great save by Emily P kept the scores level. We created a number of opportunities of our own and won several attacking corners but could not find the net. Georgia C forced a good save from the Altrincham keeper in the 16th minute but we were grateful to the post on two occasions to keep the ball out of the net. More great defending and goalkeeping saw us thwart the Altrincham attacks and at the final whistle the scores were level at 1 – 1. Player of the match was sally S for her excellent running hockey on both right and left.
AKS U14XI 1 - 3 Altrincham U14XI POM Hannah T
This was always going to be a tough return fixture against a very strong Altrincham side who had previously outplayed us earlier in the season. It was fantastic to have Tara W back in the team and she was soon brought into action by a lively Altrincham team. The AKS girls team spirit is excellent and they worked incredibly hard to pass with power and pace and start to get tight on to the opposition. The scoreline of 1-3 doesn’t really reflect the performance and improvement made by this team. Hannah T was superb seemingly everywhere and her running off the ball and ability and vision to see a pass was outstanding. 0-2 down at half time the team had chances in the second half and converted a well worked penalty corner to get the score to 1-2. However, Altrincham quickly replied with a beautiful through ball and shot on goal to make the final score 1-3. A huge welcome back to Tara W in goal. The defence of Annaleise H, Amy S, Keira B and Jenny D had to work incredibly hard to make tackle after tackle and be focussed for the whole game. The midfield of Mia W and Hattie R had the tough job of both trying to help the attack and then get back to defend and this was not easy as Altrincham broke very quickly. The forward line hassled and pressurised the Altrincham defence and were unlucky not to score more goals. Ellie Shepherd was unlucky not to score late on after making a brilliant run and almost got another goal. Player of the match: Hannah Turner for her outstanding vision to see the pass and switch the play which set up numerous attacks for AKS. Her work rate and skills were fantastic today and Hannah as captain really led by example.
AKS U13AXI 0 - 3 Altrincham U13AXI POM Eleanor L
AKS U13XI started their match with confidence this week and from the first whistle they were determined to play as well as they could against a strong Altrincham side. AKS had many great moments in both attack and defence. It was heartening to see the girls trying to apply skills to the game which they have worked on in practice. The U13’s had more confidence to take players on and use speed when necessary. They also played the ball early, utilising the self pass at free hits, therefore not allowing Altrincham time to re-organise their formation. Although the U13’s had their chances to score goals, Altrincham came out winners with a 3-0 victory. The U13’s showed that they could defend extremely well, but it was the inconsistency of marking in the circle which led to the goals, something for the team to work on. Eleanor L was awarded the player of the match for her solid tackling under pressure, and her accurate and intelligent distribution of the ball out of defence. The U13’s should be proud of their efforts and remember that every match gives them the opportunity to learn and improve.
AKS U12AVIII 9 – 0 Altrincham U12AVIII Scorers: Olivia M(4) Carley W (3) Lucy B & Katie T
POM:Olivia M & Carley W
AKS dominated the first half but were not clinical enough in front of goal, with Carly W scoring the only goal of the half with a strong sweep shot. The rest of the half saw AKS’s attempts at goal frustrated by the crowded Altrincham defence and shots at goal saved by the opposition keeper. AKS learnt from their mistakes and in the second half passed the ball wide, stretching the Altrincham defence and creating space for players to drive forward into the circle. Once in the circle free players had more time and space on the ball resulting in a second half goal storm with Olivia M scoring four, Carly W 3 and Lucy B 1. Olivia M and Carly W were both given the Player of the match due to their dominance in the attacking circle in the second half. Carly for using her pace to both set up and score goals on the right and Olivia for her dominance throughout the game and her four superb strikes from the edge of the circle. Beth R, Charlotte T, Katie T, Maddie B all played a large part in winning possession back quickly and in distributing the ball to the attackers. Lucy B also had an outstanding game playing the ball out wide to create gaps for other players to exploit and it was fitting that she completed the goal tally with a skillful shot into the corner of the goal.
AKS U12BVIII 3 – 0 Altrincham U12BVIII Scorere: Zara F, Carys B(2) POM: Amelie L
AKS got off to a positive start passing the ball strongly and setting up attacks on both the left and right of the field. A good pass from right forward Felicity C led to a goal for Zara F whose strong shot into the corner beat the opposition keeper. AKS continued to attack with centre Amelie S supporting the attack well and setting up a goal on the left post for Carys B. Altrincham came back but AKS defended well with Poppy B intercepting the ball well as sweeper and Esmeralda B- E and Amelie L playing well in defence. Just before the break an edge of the circle shot from Carys B was deflected into the goal by an Altrincham defender to give AKS a 3-0 lead at half time. A more even second half saw both teams have chances and AKS keeper Scarlett D made a good save. Ava N and Lucy P came back onto their own team after helping out the opposition in the first half and played well. Player of the match was Amelie S who never stopped running in the centre and supported both the attack and defence superbly.
