Another Fantastic Game against Stockport Grammar

It was another superb Saturday morning of hockey for the AKS teams with 6 teams playing matches against the traditionally strong Stockport Grammar School and it was honours even with 2 wins a piece and two draws.

AKS 1st XI   2  - 2  Stockport 1stXI  Scorers: Alex C, Mollie M  POM Georgia C & Emily P

The senior game was a superb advert for school hockey with both teams playing fast flowing hockey. We started the game well with Macy C using her pace to outrun the Stockport defence and get a shot away but it was well saved by the keeper. We did get reward for our good start when we went ahead in the 5th minute after great pressing from Georgia C saw Stockport lose the ball in their circle and Alec C was on hand to slot the ball into the corner. Great work in midfield from Mollie M saw us win the ball back and when a switch to Sally S saw her find Grace W her drive into the circle won a corner. We failed to convert and were grateful to a great save from Emily P minutes later to maintain our lead. Despite more good passing hockey Emily was beaten in the 22nd minute however when Stockport scored from a superb reverse stick shot at a corner and at the break the scores were level at 1 – 1.

We started the second half on the front foot again winning two corners early on but again could not find the net. More good work up front from Georgia C, Macy C and Mollie T constantly put the Stockport back four under pressure and we created more opportunities but the keeper kept the ball out and the scores remained level. Stockport always carried a threat of their own and so Lily H, Daisy S, Jess H and Hannah B had to remain focused to thwart their attacks and great corner defence and saves from Emily P maintained the scoreline. Stockport did however go ahead in the 16th minute when a reverse pass found a player free on the far post and she forced the ball over the line to make it 1 - 2.  Our response was superb as from the centre we took the game to Stockport. Great team passing saw us again work the ball down the right and when Mollie M broke free and drove into the circle her shot was agonisingly saved by the keeper. We continued to work hard for each other and were rewarded for our efforts in the 20th minute when we again won the ball back in midfield and when Mollie again found space in the circle she made no mistake in finding the corner of the goal to make it 2 – 2. The final minutes saw both teams try to find a winner but at the final whistle we had to settle for a well deserved draw. Players of the Match were Georgia C for her superb running throughout the game and Emily P for her defensive organisation and superb saves

AKS U15 XI  0  -  0  Stockport U15XI POM: Lucy R

This was a game of two halves with us dominating the first and Stockport having the best of the second. In the 4th minute a great run from Mille D saw her shot fly over the bar but this set the tone of the half and when Mille outran the defence again minutes  later and crossed to Scarlet O in the middle we were disappointed not to be awarded a penalty stroke when her goal bound shot hit a Stockport foot on the line. Sophie B came close in the 10th minute and we won several attacking corners but our best move of the half came just before the break. A great run by Sophie B saw her find Farrah D in midfield and her driving run and cross into the circle found Scarlet O on the post but it unfortunately hit her foot and the scores remained level at 0 – 0. The second half saw Stockport raise their game and start to attack with more structure and purpose. A great save from Verity W in goal and good corner defence kept the scores level but we were lucky not to go behind when a superb shot from the Stockport forward flew just wide.   Lifted by this Stockport kept up the pressure but good defending by Sally D, Amy I and Lucy R, playing in defence for the first time , thwarted their attacks and at the end of the game the score was a fair 0 – 0. Player of the Match was Lucy R who played in defence for the first time and did a great job

AKS U14 XI  5  -  0  Stockport U14XI Scorers:Ruby W (2) Ellie S (2) Lily H  POM: Ruby W

This was a hard fought win against an organised team on a lovely crisp Saturday morning. The team played the best team hockey so far this season and it was incredibly satisfying to see all the things we have been working on in training being put into the game and working! Quick self passes, well worked and slick penalty corners and match pace intensity passing and moving the ball from left to right were the highlights of this game. It enabled AKS to take charge and score 5 well worked goals. Jenny D was superb in defence, confident and calm. Her communication was fantastic and she marshaled her midfield and defence to man mark and when she tackled and won the the ball she quickly turned a defensive situation into attack with an accurate clearance.  Keira B, Anna H and Amy S were solid in defence and made excellent tackles to stop the opposition from scoring. Sydney G was alert and kept another clean sheet in goal. The midfield of Mia W, Hannah T and Hattie R linked up beautifully with the defence and their pace when dribbling the ball and their decisive driving runs forward and accurate passing enabled the AKS team to attack quickly throughout the game. All three players were first to the ball and they worked tirelessly defensively to win back the ball and get it back into the attack. Ellie S, Ruby W and Lily H’s  running off the ball was excellent and they were the first line of defence. All three players got goals and it was just rewards for their leg work and effort. Both Ellie S and Lily H reacted quickly and were in good positions to score goals. Special mention to Lily H on her first full game and goal for the U14 team.

Player of the match was Ruby W whose work rate in attack and defence was superb all game. I want to congratulate Ruby on her willingness to take on board advice in training as her skill levels and understanding of the game are really making huge progress. She was unlucky not to score more than two goals, but her running off the ball and vision to spot a free player in a better position and unselfishly pass was excellent today.

AKS U13 XI  0  -  1  Stockport U13XI    POM: Gabriella F & Ziv W

Wow, what a superb match against Stockport. AKS U13’s had recently played against Stockport with a final score being a 0-0 draw. This match on Saturday certainly looked like it was going to have a touch of deja-vu up until the last 5 minutes.

This match was played with great spirit and competitiveness, where both teams played with much respect for each other, demonstrating great sportsmanship. The match could have gone either way with both teams having goal scoring opportunities. In the final 5 minutes of the match AKS had had a spell of continuous attack in the Stockport’s defending half. Unfortunately for AKS Stockport had a lucky counter attack break, which left AKS U13’s back pedaling. This resulted in a one v one with the AKS Goal Keeper and a goal scored by Stockport.

Ziv W was a constant threat in front of the goal, attacking with great speed and determination. Ziv had many goal scoring opportunities only to be denied by the Stockport’s Goal Keeper, hence Stockport voting Ziv as Player of the Match.

Although there were many brilliant moments of play by each member of the team, the Player of the Match goes to Gabby F. Gabby was determined to improve on her attacking ability, to take a player on and beat them. During the match Gabby had the confidence to carry out her mission and had many successful attempts, setting up many an attacking drive.

Eleanor L must also be commended on her calm and controlled defending and her spectacular distribution of the ball throughout the game, in particular on her 16 yard hit outs.

The whole team are to be applauded on their positive team spirit and their will to win. The U13 girls can only take pride from their performance and must build on their many experiences throughout the game.

AKS U12A VIII 3  -  0  Stockport U12AVIII      Scorer: Katie T(2) Laura K   POM: Katie T

AKS began the game strongly with a good move on the right started by Charlotte T resulting in an early goal for Katie T. Stockport worked hard to get back in the game but Beth R and Olivia M were faultless in the AKS defence whilst Lucy B dominated the middle. Good passing from the AKS team led to them winning a penalty corner just before half time. The initial shot from Beth R was saved but Katie T was on hand to score from the rebound. A more even second half saw AKS continue to defend well and keeper Maddison Rmake two good saves. AKS kept possession well with the defenders moving the ball out of defence quickly to set up attacks particularly on the right where Patsy C and Carly W linked well. The third goal came midway through the half when Laura K got on the end of a Lucy B through pass to score with an instinctive first time shot at goal. Player of the match was Charlotte T who never stopped running; both in defence and also supporting the attacks with some fine overlapping runs

AKS U12B VIII 0  -  4  Stockport U12BVIII  POM: Sacrlet D & Maddison B

The U12 B team came up against a fast and powerful Stockport side and struggled to match the speed of both their movement and passing. Stockport started well with good play down their right but Poppy B was on hand to clear our lines. A lack of width meant we struggled to keep possession and Stockport got reward for their good play when they went ahead in the 5th minute. Scarlet D made some good saves to keep the score to just one but in the 13th minute Stockport were on the scoresheet again and at half time the score was 0 – 2. An improved second half saw us keep more width to our game and with Maddison B working hard in the centre of the field we started to pose a threat to the Stockport goal. Zara F and Carys B worked hard up front and made the Stockport keeper make several saves but we could not find the net. Good defending by Amelie L and more good goalkeeping limited the Stockport chances but two more goals in the second half made the final score 0 – 4. Players of the Match were Scarlet D for thwarting many attacks and Maddison B for her hard work throughout the game.
