9 teams enjoy great Saturday morning of hockey

It was another superb Saturday morning of hockey for the AKS teams as 9 teams played matches with the A teams taking on Stockport Grammar at home and the B teams travelling to Blackburn to take on Westholme.

The block fixture against the traditionally strong Stockport sides saw all the AKS teams record some excellent results and remain undefeated for the second successive Saturday with three teams winning and three enjoying close drawn matches.

AKS 1st XI   2  - 0  Stockport 1stXI  Scorers: Amelia A, Lucy R  POM Lily H

The Senior side led by example with a well deserved 2-0 victory. We started well taking the game to Stockport with determined tackling and excellent passing. Mollie M upfront held the ball up well to bring other players into the game and create scoring opportunities in the first five minutes but we could not find the net. We did however get reward for our good start when in the 11th minute a great driving run from midfield by Grace W saw her beat the Stockport defence and her perfect pass found Amelia A infront of goal and she made no mistake in slotting home to make the score 1 -0. We continued to work hard and nearly went further ahead in the 15th minute when a good pass by Freya B-S found Lucy R in the circle and her early shot bought a good save from the keeper. Stockport then had some chances of their own but great defending by Lily H thwarted their best efforts to maintain our lead. Mollie T and Mollie M worked hard up front to close down the Stockport defence and after a great drive and pass from Lucy R Mollie T shot just wide and at half time we had a slender 1-0 lead.
Stockport started the second half and put us under pressure but great defending from Jess H, Megan C , Daisy S and Cally B kept the Stockport forward at bay. More good work from Mollie T, Lucy R and mollie M won a corner in the 8th minute but Stockport defended well and the score ream8ned at 1-0. Stockport then enjoyed a period of possession but again good defending and some good saves from Emily P in goal maintained our lead. The result was settled in the last 5 minutes when a barrage of shots from our forwards led to a corner which Lucy R slott d home to secure the win and at the final whistle the team had earned a well deserved 2 - 0 victory. POM was  Lily H for her superb defending

AKS U15 XI  0  -  0  Stockport U15XI POM: Amy I & Rebecca H

The U15 side took to the field confident after their win of last week and they started brightly with Farrah D dominating in midfield and causing havoc with her driving runs forward. In the 6th minute we almost went ahead after another great run and pass from Farrah found Amelia L infront of goal but her shot went agonisingly wide. Minutes later Mille D outran the Stockport defence only to find her shot saved by the keeper.
Stockpot then started to create some chance of their own but great defending from Rebecca H, Olivia M and Amy I together with sound goalkeeping from Emily P kept us on level terms into the half time break.
The second half saw Stockport raise their game and they started to pass more effectively and put us under a lot of pressure. More good defending by all the team limited their goal scoring chances and sound penalty corner defence saw the scores remain level. Millie D was a constant threat on the right and when in the last few minutes she again outran the Stockport defence and found Amelia L infront of goal we could have snatched a late winner but her shot again flew just wide and we had to settle for a well deserved draw. Players of the match were Amy I for her timely tackles at the back and Rebecca H for her excellent marking.

AKS U14 XI  2  -  1  Stockport U14XI Scorers:  POM: Ellie S

This was another superb game to watch with both teams showing great skill and competitive drive. The first half was extremely tight with both AKS and Stockport Grammar creating chances but not getting enough of them on target or the goalkeepers making great saves. It was also an extremely fast paced game with early passes from defence, quickly moving the ball up to the midfield and onto the forwards. Our defence of Anna H, Keira D, Amy S and Lily H bought training ground moves into the game by passing quickly and using the width well. Both teams were extremely strong particularly down the right hand side and the AKS first goal came from a move down the right with Nyah H and Hattie R, then a pass to Ruby W who showed lovely silky ball and stick skills to beat 3 defenders and place a hard sweep shot into the corner of the goal. However, Stockport hit back after putting a lot of pressure on the AKS team with a very well worked and fast break which resulted in a goal just before half time. In the half time team talk, a slight change of positions was required to match the strength of the opposition and the girls responded superbly. Hannah T and Jenny D both moved into the centre with Mia W moving up to midfield. The tactics worked as in the second half every AKS player did their bit defensively to stop Stockport scoring again including Sydney G in goal and the winning AKS goal was scored. A quick break saw some lovely passing, and then Ellie S finished off the well executed move with a first time shot to score and seal the win. Defensively, we looked much more organised this week and again I want to congratulate all the team as this is also something we have been working on. Thank you as always to the parents for your support, and thank you to Hattie for baking the delicious cup cakes for the team!

POM: Ellie Shepherd for her running off the ball to get into space to receive the pass. She also worked incredibly hard to put pressure on the Stockport defence and this allowed her to keep winning possession back for AKS.

AKS U13 XI  0  -  0  Stockport U13XI POM: Poppy B

What a cracking match to start the U13 teams first attempt at an 11 aside game. For both teams this was a step up from the usual 7 aside format and they both handled it superbly. The atmosphere at Stanley Park was electric with a lot of parental support for the team which was very much appreciated. The cliché of end to end game was very apt as both teams were moving the ball at pace. Stockport and AKS were very well matched in terms of skill and fitness throughout the game and a draw was a very fair result for both teams.

Amy P, Eleanor L, Abigail F and Freya W had to work very hard defensively to track back and make tackle after tackle. Well done to Felicity F-W in goal for staying focused and keeping a clean sheet. The midfield of Alicia I, Poppy B and Gabby F ran their socks off to help link up with the defence and distribute the ball to the forwards. Ziv W, Prisha R and Millie B were our first line of defence as well as running at the Stockport defence. At the half time team talk the girls were asked to look to pass the ball wide more and to also give the player on the ball an option for a pass. There was a huge improvement in both aspects of this during the second half and I want to congratulate the girls on how well they worked together to get a hard earned draw. It was an absolute pleasure to take this team and to see them play and make huge progress in the space of 40 minutes.  A target for the team now would be to keep their composure when in possession of the ball and ensure the pass is to a team mate or into space. They also need to be more clinical when in the attacking circle to get a shot or win a corner. POM: Poppy Bridge for her tireless running and shadowing of the opposition and the number of tackles and interceptions she made. Poppy seemed to cover every inch of the pitch and be there either defensively and then straight into attack.

AKS U12A VIII 2  -  1  Stockport U12AVIII      Scorer: Gabriella F   POM: Beth R & Lucy B

The U12 A team started the brighter of the two teams and created a number of attacking plays. The team worked effectively together with the defence of Maddison B, Beth R, Lucy B and Olivia M winning possession and  switching the ball wide, which created gaps in the Stockport defence in which the AKS attackers of Laura K, Katie T and Patsy C could exploit. Within minutes of the start of the match an early cross played in from the right from Patsy C allowed Laura K to take an instinctive first time shot that just went wide of the left post. However, a couple of minutes later they were rewarded as an exact same play took place in which Laura K swept the ball into the goal with an unstoppable shot. Stockport then improved the pace at which they played and put pressure on the AKS defence. The team defended this spell with clinical defending and were very quick at releasing the ball out from defence to the forwards. AKS scored the 2nd of their 2 goals in this spell with superb team work and passing when Lucy B went around a player and slipped the ball to Patsy C who played the ball quickly back to Lucy in what was the move of the game in which Lucy was on to goal unchallenged to cleverly slot the ball past the oncoming keeper. An excellent first half which showed huge improvements in AKS positioning and team play.

The second half was much closer with both teams struggling to create any real scoring opportunities. Lucy B and Olivia M linked well to work the ball forwards into attacking positions but Stockport defended very well and we failed to add to the score. Stockport did have the ball in the net late in the game but the goal was ruled out as it was struck outside the circle and at the final whistle the score was a well deserved 2 – 0 victory. Beth R & Lucy B were players of the match for their excellent defending.

AKS U12B VIII 1  -  1  Stockport U12BVIII  Scorer: Gabriella F   POM: Beth R & Lucy B                                       The B team started nervously and neither team used the width of the pitch meaning all the play was down the crowded centre of the field.  This meant we struggled to keep possession of the ball and scoring opportunities were rare. Poppy B tackled well at the back and tried hard to distribute the ball wide as the game progressed but at the break the scores were level at 0 – 0.

The second half was also very even and it was always going to be a case of which team could pass the ball out of defence strongly up to the attack would have goalscoring opportunities. Stockport were the first to take advantage of this tactic and played the ball through to an unmarked player in the circle who then calmly scored passed Maddison R in goal. Maddison then had a number of other 1 v 1 attacks in which she closed down effectively to force the striker to shoot wide.

With 5 minutes to go, AKS started to pass the ball with greater pace and a strong and accurate pass from Poppy in defence went straight through to Zara F who ran at speed into the circle and with a well struck shot hit the ball passed the keeper. At 1 - 1 the last few minutes were frantic with both teams attempting to get the elusive winner but the game ended a fair draw. Zara F was made player of the match for her tireless running on the pitch to win back possession and to then push forward in attack, but especially for her composure in front of goal.

AKS U14B XI  1  - 2 Westholme U14XI Scorers: Ellie W  POM: Ciara M
AKS started extremely strong against Westholme.  They switched the ball from the right of the pitch and driving down the left side into the circle where Emily T was able to take the first shot using her reverse stick.  AKS continued to pass the ball early and kept the pressure on Westholme's defence for the first 10mins.  Unfortunately they weren't able to convert their chances against a great Goalkeeper.  Westholme came back with determination and made a break against the run of play to take the score to 1-0 just before half time.  AKS maintained their work rate into the second half and Ellie W brought the score level.  AKS battled and passed the ball extremely well.  They were very unlucky for the last minute goal to be placed into the left corner shortly before the end of the game. Player of the match was Ciara M for some great saves.
