The AKS Year 8 rounders team are celebrating being crowned Fylde & Wyre league champions after winning the play-off tournament against Baines and Millfield by the narrowest of margins, just half a rounder!
In the first game against Baines we batted first and after a solid performance from everyone we kept the scoreboard ticking along and scored 6.5 rounders. Baines went in to bat but superb fielding limited their scoring in the early stages and with great catches from Nyah H and Mia W and post work from Hannah T we soon had five of their side out. At the end of the first innings we had limited Baines to scoring just 1.5 rounders.
Baines improved their fielding in the second innings and we found it difficult to find any spaces in the field and so had to be content with half, rather than full rounders and at the end of our second innings we had increased our score to 10 rounders. We started superbly in the field with the excellent combination of Anna H bowler, Jenny D backstop and Nyah H 1st base dismissing three Baines batsmen in quick succession. More efficient fielding by Mia W, Ruby W and Hattie R again limited the Baines scoring and at the end of the game we had limited Baines to scoring just 6 rounders and so were celebrating our first win.
Our second game against Millfield saw us field first and it was soon evident that they had some good hitters in their team. Some great shots into spaces saw Millfield score several rounders in quick succession but then three great catches from Jenny D at backstop and Ruby W, Hattie R and Nyah H in the field saw their batting line up depleted and at the end of the innings they had scored 5.5. Millfield’s quick bowler took us by surprise and we struggled to get bat on ball in the first minutes of the game but we slowly got to grips with the speed of the bowling and some great running between the bases pressurised the Millfield fielders into mistakes and we started to score more freely. Ellie S, Hattie R, Nyah H and Hannah T scored rounders and at the end of the first innings we were narrowly ahead 7 – 5.5.
Millfield started their second innings well scoring rounders off the first three batsman and this saw them grow in confidence and put pressure on our fielding. We did get a few out with more good work by Anna H, Jenny D and Nyah H but Millfield continued to get bat on ball and at the end of their innings they had scored 13.5 and set us a challenging target of scoring 14 rounders to win. The pacey Millfield bowler again made it difficult for us to score and when we lost two batsmen early on the pressure was mounting. Nyah H made contact well and made it round to get the scoreboard moving along again and Jenny D added another rounder with a minute to go but despite our best efforts Millfield’s efficient fielding saw them stop us adding to our score and at the end of the innings we had scored 11.5. A valiant effort but we were beaten by a good batting and fielding side.
With a win and a loss we had to wait until the final game Baines vs Millfield had been played to find out our position. Baines beat Millfield and with each school winning one game and losing won the final positions were decided by total number of rounders scored. This proved to be the closest it could be but with Baines scoring 18, Millfield 21 AKS were crowned champions by scoring just a half a rounder more with 21.5.
