Yr 8 & 9 Rounders Teams win exciting league matches against Lytham

AKS enjoyed a successful second league rounders encounter winning two of their three matches against neighbours Lytham High school.

The AKS Year 8 team continued their winning ways with a close, hard fought victory. AKS won the toss and took to the field first. Excellent, efficient fielding limited Lytham’s scoring opportunities in the first minutes of the match and they failed to get any rhythm to their play. Two great catches from Mia W put the Lytham batters under more pressure and at the end of the innings we had limited Lytham to scoring just 7 rounders.

AKS went into bat but struggled to get the ball past the well organised Lytham fielders and had to settle for scoring half rounders at the start of the innings. Tara W broke the deadlock scoring a rounder with a well placed hit and then further scores from Ellie S, Nyah H, Hattie R and Mia W saw us go into the break ahead at 11.5 to 7.

Lytham started their second innings well scoring from their first hit but another good catch from Mia W and good post play from Hannah T saw them lose four players in quick succession whilst slowly closing in on AKS first innings total. More half rounders saw Lytham draw level and some rather rushed fielding saw us miss stumping opportunities and allow Lytham to convert half rounders into full ones and so increase their total at the end of their second innings to 16.

Having to score five rounders to win the match, our second innings could not have got off to a better start with Anna H, Jenny D and Hattie R all scoring rounders with some well placed hitting from the first three bowls. With AKS now only needing two rounders to win Lytham were under a lot of pressure not to give away any scores and this told as their fielding became more erratic allowing us to gradually reduce their lead. However when Jenny D and Ruby W hit the ball superbly into the spaces Lytham could do nothing to stop us scoring and we went ahead. Further rounders from Nyah H, Jenny D (2) and Hannah T extended our lead and at the end of the game we were celebrating a 24.5 – 16 win. Player of the match was Tara W for her intelligent fielding and two rounders.

After defeat in their first match the Year 9 team raised their game and came out victorious in a very close and exciting game. AKS started the batting and were successful in scoring several  rounders as their decision making when running the bases was very good and pushed Lytham into making some mistakes with their fielding.  As Lytham went into bat AKS kept their fielding tight and were able to restrict Lytham’s scoring until the last few minutes of the first innings.  At this point Lytham began to exploit AKS gaps in the outfield and the score stood at 10-9 to Lytham by the end of the first innings.

Lytham continued to field extremely well in the second innings and managed to get most of the AKS team out with good catching and post fielding.  Sally D and Millie D however managed not only stay in until the end of the innings, but they also scored rounder after rounder which kept AKS in the match with 17 rounders as their final score.  Defending a low total was always going to be difficult but AKS fielded superbly making good decisions and catching well which limited Lytham’s scoring opportunities. Lytham edged closer to the AKS total and the outcome of the match rested on the last good ball. Lytham had to score at least half a rounder to draw level but good bowling did not give the batter an opportunity to get a clean hit and despite her best efforts AKS managed to keep her from scoring the final half, stumping the post just before the batter to make the final score 17 – 16.5 to AKS.

The Year 7 A team also had a nail biting match which saw 43 rounders being scored and the result in the balance until the last three balls.AKS batted first and after some good running between the bases and some great hitting from Ziv W they scored a creditable 7.5 rounders. Lytham got off to a good start scoring early in their innings and despite good bowling from Prisha R and solid AKS fielding Lytham had their noses infront with10 rounders at the end of the first innings.  AKS second innings started well with more great hitting from Ziv W to add to the AKS total. With everyone contributing half or full rounders the team saw the score pass the Lytham total and with Ziv W scoring from almost every hit the score had risen to an impressive 20 rounders at the end of our second innings setting Lytham a formidable target to win.

Lytham started their second innings slowly with great AKS fielding limiting their scoring opportunities early on and Ziv W getting their best batter out with an amazing catch. Lytham, however, got into their stride keeping the scoring ticking along with several half rounders and with minutes to go the result was still in doubt. Great hitting from the last Lytham batsmen and excellent running at speed around the bases saw them score rounders off the last three balls of the innings and so snatch victory by just two rounders in 43. A very exciting and close match in which both sides fielded and batted well. Ziv W was player of the match for her superb batting scoring 7 rounders and an excellent catch.
