The Year 8 rounders team made an excellent start to their season with an emphatic win against St.Bedes. Batting first we got off to the perfect start when Captain Annaleise H scored from the very first ball of the innings and things got even better when Jenny D added another from the very next ball and we soon had 5 rounders on the board. With superb hitting into spaces we put the St.Bedes fielders under pressure and with intelligent running we racked up an impressive 15 rounders in our first innings. We then took to the field for the first time and once again made the perfect start when Ellie S took a great catch to dismiss the hard hitting opening batsman from St.Bedes. Good bowling from Annaleise H made it difficult for St.Bedes batsman to get any direction or distance on their hits and good fielding from Jenny D at backstop and Hannah T on 2nd base limited the scoring and at the break we were comfortably ahead 15 - 2.
Our second innings saw all the team hit the ball well and find gaps in the field which made it difficult for the the St.Bedes fielders. With good hitting and running all the team scored rounders and by the end of the innings we had an impressive total of 30 ½ rounders. St.Bedes started their second innings with a mountain to climb but they got off to a good start when their first batsman connected well to send the ball over the heads of our fielders and she easily made it home to score. This focused our fielding and Tara W positioned herself intelligently to stop another dangerous St.Bedes batter finding space over 1st base. A great catch from Annaleise H dismissed their first batsman and more great catching from Jenny D, Ruby W and Hannah T saw three further batsman dismissed. St. Bedes did manage to score several rounders with great hits but despite some shaky moments we generally fielded soundly and restricted St.Bedes to just 5 ½ rounders in their second innings giving us a very impressive 23 rounder winning margin. Jenny D was voted Player of the match for her excellent play as backstop.
Playing together as a team for the first time the year 7 girls were clearly nervous but the game got off to a good start with Captain Kiera K winning the toss and electing to field first. A good first innings saw the team stay focused and display some good fielding skills, throwing and catching accurately to limit the opposition to 7 rounders. AKS went in to bat and got off to a great start with the first 3 batters all hitting the ball strongly to score rounders. This set the tone for the rest of the batting innings with the team consistently hitting the ball into spaces and scoring half or full rounders to give AKS the half time lead with a first innings total 13 rounders.
St Bedes went into bat for their second innings and improved their batting success rate finding gaps in the AKS field to score 17 rounders in total. This meant that AKS needed 5 rounders to win the game. Once again the batting was strong with AKS scoring a total of 28 ½ rounders to win the game. This was a superb total for the team and a great start to their rounders season.
With some key players playing tennis a weakened AKS Year 9 side started the game well with some extremely good batting in their first innings to score 5 rounders. St.Bedes went into bat and immediately got onto the scoresheet with some excellent hitting to match AKS score. AKS began to settle into their stride and work together as a fielding team towards the end of the innings but by the break St.Bedes had edged ahead with 10 rounders. In our second innings the St.Bede's well drilled side in the field and were able to put AKS under huge pressure whilst they were running the bases but despite this we added 5 ½ rounders to edge ahead. AKS started their second fielding innings with some excellent catches but with only a narrow lead St.Bedes soon edged ahead with more good batting and by the end had scored a total of 20 rounders against our 10 ½ .
