The girls’ athletics teams got off to a great start in their first match of the season against neighbours Lytham with some superb individual performances and over 40 girls competing for the school.
For the Year 7 team it was their first competitive outing and they show great promise with many excellent performances. Alex M jumped 1.20m to win the high jump and then made it a winning double with a throw of 7.35m in the shot. Ziv W impressed in the hurdles winning in 16.1s and she also won the long jump with 3.79m. In the distance events Poppy B ran an impressive 6.02m in the 1500m and Gabriella F also won the 800m with a personal best time of 3.07m. Other athletes who shone were Preesha R who jumped 1.20m in the high jump Kiera K who threw 7.18m in the shot and Phoebe M-C who jumped 3.73m in the long jump.
Star performer in the Year 8 team was Hannah T who had two impressive wins in the hurdles (14.5s) and 800m (3.04m) and a third place in the long jump (4.15m). Hattie R also performed well on the track coming second in the 800m (3.21m) and hurdles (16.3s). Jenny Dawson recorded a good time in the 1500m (6.16m) and Annaleise H was second in the 200m with 36.3s. In the field Ellie S threw the javelin 16.45m with Ruby W close behind with 16.30m
The Year 9 team dominated all the events with Millie D winning the 100m ( 15.8s) and long jump ( 3.98m) while Sophie B won the 200m (32.8s) and was second in the long jump ( 3.58m). There were some great performances in the field with Rebecca H throwing 20.38m in the discus while Farrah D threw the javelin 19.95m for victory.
Great credit goes to our small group of Year 10 athletes who performed superbly. Grace W proved her athletic prowess with wins in the 800m (2.53s) and long jump (4.14m). Georgia M ran superbly to win the 100m in 15.5s whilst in the field Charlotte L won the discus with a superb throw of 20.45m.
This was a great start to the athletics season and gives all the athletes a benchmark and target for them to beat in the weeks ahead with many opportunities to practice and train at extra-curricular clubs.
