Hockey Season finishes with House Competitions

The end of the hockey season at AKS was, as always, celebrated with the annual House Hockey competitions. The house competitions give all pupils the opportunity to be part of their house team and compete against the other school houses where the closely fought competitions always provide a sporting opportunity to demonstrate teamwork and co-operation.

The Year 7 competition saw every pupil play their part and there was some impressive hockey played by all teams showing how far they had progressed since being introduced to hockey in September. Leighton made it a hockey and netball house double as they finished unbeaten after the three games to be crowned champions. Having a number of A team players in their ranks they produced some great passing hockey and with key strikers Ziv W, Preesha R and Gabriella F up front to convert their chances and Eleanor L at the back to thwart the opposition attacks they were an impressive team and deservedly lifted the title. Rufford matched their netball result finishing in runners-up spot with Gawthorpe 3rd and Samlesbury 4th.

The Year 8 competition was a thrilling one with the final positions all dependent on the last round of matches. Once again the standard of hockey was superb with the school team players leading by example in their work rate, skill level and tactical play. Just as impressively, however was the way they supported those girls playing for their house team with positive encouragement and helpful support.  Goalkeeper Tara W saved her house on numerous occasions showing how much she has improved over the season and with her sister Mia infront of her they proved to be a formidable obstacle for the opposition to overcome. Hannah Turner dominated the centre of the pitch in all the games and Ruby W was always a threat up front. Unlike the Year 7 competition where one house dominated all the teams were very close. With no team winning all their games the final result was a three way tie with Gawthorpe, Rufford and Samlesbury all finishing at the top and gaining valuable House points.

The Year 9 competition saw the house netball result reversed with Leighton finishing on top and Gawthorpe having to settle for runners-up spot. Once again the tournament was played in a fantastic spirit with all the girls showing great skills, co-operation and teamwork especially those having to play out of position for their house, particularly in goal. Lancashire County players Emily P, Sophie B, Millie D and Farrah D showed their class with their dominant play but overall everyone contributed to the team performances of all the houses and made it a superb competition and a fitting climax to the season.

After another busy and successful season on the hockey pitch at AKS the house competitions were, as always, a fitting final competition enjoyed by all the players.
