Our U10 girls’ hockey team played in the final tournament of the season at Kirkham Grammar. With eight teams competing in two groups of four, the girls were confident of further success to add to what has already been a momentous season.
In our group we were pitted against Rossall, King’s Chester and Westholme Schools. We won the first match against Rossall with Carly scoring a very skilful first goal, reverse flicking it in to the roof of the net. Jessie added a second and Carly another one to give us a great start. The next game was against King’s Chester. More dominant play with Charlotte and Jessica competing well in midfield and attacking at will with the forwards, the game ended in another resounding victory, 4-0 to AKS. A clinical finish from Charlotte was followed by another Carly goal. Jessie added the final two with one being a delightful touch to a free flowing move. In the final group match we scored another four goals. Once again Jessie bagged two, Carly one and Priyanka scored with a well taken goal.
These results meant we had won our group and played Queen’s Chester, a much bigger school, in the semi-final. In this match we were completely dominant. We attacked with pace and energy. Charlotte and Anna linked up well down the right and any attacks that Queen’s had were defended well by Lisa and Jessica. Victoria, in goals, had one save to make but she did it with great confidence. Charlotte produced cross after cross from the right with her marauding runs. Five goals were scored in total with Anna and Carly scoring one apiece and Jessie bagging a hat-trick. Final score AKS 5 Queen’s Chester 0.
In the final we met Kirkham Grammar. We started off brightly with Jessie going close from a penalty corner. The game proved to be end to end but the Kirkham team appeared to have a little more energy, and from one of their attacks they got the breakthrough goal. Our girls tried their best to get back in to the game but an injury to Charlotte did not help and she had to go off. The game ended in a 1-0 loss and we finished with silver medals. Tired legs in the end meant we were just unable to repeat the form we showed in the rest of the tournament. However, this result means that the school has entered 10 tournaments this season, winning 3 and being runners up in 5. A lot of medals have been worn around AKS this term so well done to all hockey players for a stupendous season. I must also thank our wonderful support today and over the whole season. The encouragement from the side-lines have spurred our teams on. Thank you also to Kirkham Grammar School for hosting the tournament. We shall look forward to another season starting in September
