Year 10 Netball back in action

After a break the AKS Year 10 netball team were back in competitive action as they took on Baines and it proved to be an excellent game with the result in the balance until the last few minutes.

Both teams started slowly and play was rather scrappy with possession being won and lost easily by both sides.  Gradually we started to gain more control of the ball and kept possession well.  Unfortunately our goals were matched by Baines and the scores went with centres to remain level. Towards the end of the first period, a couple of lapses saw us lose valuable possession and Baines punished us by converting these into goals.  Baines also won the ball at our centre pass and at the break they had the lead with the score of 3 – 5.

After the break we started to play more controlled netball and put together some superb patterns of play.  Great defending from Georgina B and Georgia M in our defending circle made it difficult for the Baines shooters to get the ball close to the post.  When they did get the ball, they were accurate and scored a high percentage of their shots.  Emily R was always available to get a pass and linked the defence to attack well.  After some excellent passages of play, which Elle C and Alex C duly converted, we went into the next break 8 – 12 behind, but still in touch and with everything to play for.

The next period saw us raise our game and play our best netball yet.  From the whistle we converted our centre with a slick well-worked move and then won the ball from the Baines centre.  Thanks to great defending from Rameesha A and Emily R, Hannah B worked well to link the centre court to the circle.  When Elle C converted the chances, we made we clawed our way back on to level terms at 12 all.  Having worked so hard to get back on terms we then got carried away and lacked control in our play, which allowed Baines to regain possession and go back into a three goal lead.  To our credit we lifted our game again and got back to disciplined, controlled netball, but at the final whistle we couldn’t close the gap and the score was 16 – 19.

Overall a closely contested game played by two very even sides and in a great spirit.  Players of the match were Emily R for her hard work in all thirds of the court and Georgia M for her excellent defending against her taller opponent.
