U13s & U15s Rugby
AKS played host to the Nora Lipscombe U13s competition and an U15s 7 a-side competition. Despite the changeable weather both events were a huge success with 32 teams, 74 games played and over 370 students taking part. Throughout both events the fixtures were ably refereed by AKS current and former, 6th form students, who did a fantastic job.
Within the U15s cup competition Stockport Grammar, Merchant Taylors, St Marys Crosby and Kirkham toping their groups, with Stockport Grammar and St Marys Crosby meeting an exciting final. Both teams were 12 points apiece at the full time whistle, with St Marys scoring the golden point in extra time to win 17-12.
In the Trophy competition Giggleswick played Altrincham Grammar in one semi-final, with Bolton school against Birkenhead Grammar in the other. In the final Altrincham overcame Bolton winning 14-10. In the shield final Stonyhurst beat Hutton 31-7 and in the Bowl despite leading the game from the start, AKS lost in the last play of the game to QEGS Blackburn making the final score 29-26.
In the Nora Lipscombe competition saw the new school regulations come in to play. This mean that following the initial group stage, rather than a knock out the groups played a round robin for the respective competition. Topping their groups were Wirral Grammar, Lancaster, Kirkham and Altrincham Grammar, seeing them go in top the cup competition. The eventual winners were Kirkham with Wirral taking runners up in the group.
In the Trophy competition, there was a very closely fought battle with all teams beating each other, this meant a count back to find an eventual winner. It was King William School for the Isle of Man, who took the trophy with St Marys Hall taking the runners up place. In the Shield Hutton took first place with Birkenhead runners up and in the Bowl Audenshaw first place with Bolton School Runners up.
Following the U13s competition the Master in charge of Rugby at Wirral Grammar said “This was a fantastic competition which allowed all teams to play an equal amount of game and all teams were able to achieve success”.
The AKS students are relishing the rest of the 7 a-side season culminating in the senior squad travelling to the prestigious competition at Rosslyn Park at the end of March.
