The Under 13’s have had a very busy week of sport with two hockey tournaments and one netball tournament.
The U13 A team successfully qualified in the Lancashire round of the 7 aside National Hockey Competition to play in the North West Hockey Semi Final at AKS. They competed against strong teams from Cumbria, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and South Yorkshire.
AKS knew they had a tough competition ahead and rose to the occasion. In their first match they played the Runners Up of the competition, Manchester High School and fought hard to draw 0-0. They went onto play St Edwards and although they dominated play throughout had to settle for a 1-0 win. Austin Friars School were AKS’s next match and it was another close match. Unfortunately after being a 0-0 draw at half time, a few defensive errors in the second half allowed Austin Friars to win 2-0. The AKS team had a hard fought battle against Hill House, the eventual winners, who managed to score in the dying last minutes of the match. The fifth and final game was against Queens School, Chester and at this stage of the tournament it was still not clear which two teams would qualify for the North Final. The AKS girls battled hard and once again were drawing at half time. In the second half Queen’s managed to convert an opportunity to score and win 1-0.
The U13 girls should be proud of their performance against a very strong field of teams from over the North West Region. Their focus, determination and exemplary team play are to be commended. Congratulations to Jenny D, Annalise H, Nyah H, Hattie R, EllieS, Hannah T, Ruby W, Mia W, Tara W.
It was great to see that the AKS U13B team also played in an Invitational Hockey Tournament in the same week. The girls played in the A team section, consisting of 8 teams. AKS competed against Altrincham Grammar, who were the eventual joint winners of the competition. This was certainly a hard fought, nail biting match with end to end play. Unfortunately with the last hit of play, Altrincham scored a goal as the final whistle blew. AKS went onto to win the next two matches against Rossall and Lytham High School.
After finishing second in their pool, AKS entered the final stages of the main competition. Losing their semi final match against Mary Erskine, who became the eventual joint winners of the competition, AKS went onto to play in the third and fourth play-off. It was fair to say that AKS U13’s drew their match and became worthy joint 3rd position in the competition.
The U13 B team are to be credited for their fantastic team spirit, determination and positivity throughout the tournament. Many congratulations to the U13B team: Charlotte A, Jade B, Kiera B, Grace E, Sydney G, Muskaan K, Lily P, Ellie S, Amy S and Ellie W.
