Our U11 girls have been at it again (winning). They travelled on a two-and-a-half-hour journey to Doncaster on a coach for the regional finals of the mini hockey championships, knowing that a place was up for grabs in the North of England Hockey finals.
Six schools were taking part and our first game was against our biggest rivals this season, Queen’s Chester School. Having beaten us last week in the AJIS final we were determined to change the result this time. Queen’s started strongly but Olivia M defended superbly to keep their star player at bay and Jessica put in a fine display at right midfield. As the first half progressed we began to gain a foothold in the game with Charlotte and Carly taking the game to Queen’s. Just before the break a lovely move was finished off sweetly by Charlotte. 1-0 at half time and an encouraging team talk set us up for a confident second half display. From the off we attacked their goal winning several penalty corners. Although we were unable to add to our lead, we continued to defend well on the odd occasion Queen’s attacked, and a 1-0 victory was just the start we needed.
Our next opponents were Kirkham Grammar and although they defended well the AKS girls held the edge and a solitary goal from Carly was enough for another win. Playing King’s Chester straight after the Kirkham game tested our stamina but we produced a delightful display of passing hockey in this match. Lucy dictated play in the middle and Anna set up many attacks with clever passes from the back. Three goals superbly finished by Carly gave us a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Our final two games were against sides from Yorkshire. We defeated Bramley Grange School with two goals from Jessie and one a piece from Katie and Carly. In our final match we played the hosts Hill House. Although they had some skilful players our organisation and clinical finishing won us the game. Lucy and Charlotte scored our two goals.
Having won all of their games the AKS girls were crowned North West Champions and there were some very happy parents and children on the return journey to Lytham. Our next stop in this competition is our final one at the North Finals in Leeds on Tuesday 21st March. Good luck to the team!
