The AKS U13’s put in a gusty and determined performance in the Lancashire U13 Hockey Tournament, competing not only against the opposition, but also the weather.
The first match was against the eventual winners, Kirkham Grammar School. This match could have gone either way, however a 0-0 draw was a fair reflection of both team’s efforts.
With this result it was clear that it was essential that AKS needed to win their next two matches to have a chance of going through to the semi -finals. AKS had lots of possession and worked hard to link in attack, resulting in well learned goals. The girls went on to beat Heysham 8-0 and Ripley St Thomas 6-0.
AKS had reached the semi-final against St Mary’s Hall. The girls knew they had to win this match to secure a place in the Regional Final, the next round of this National competition. As the weather deteriorated, the playing conditions started to take their toll as the girls fought hard against the wind and rain. It was a highly competitive game with both teams scoring, with the final score 1-1 draw at full time. To win a place in the Final, extra time needed to be played; with great attacking play, AKS utilised their well executed short corners to score a further two goals, resulting in the 3-1 win.
AKS saw themselves once again meeting Kirkham in the Final. Although having drawn in the first game of this tournament, the terrible weather conditions and extra time in the semi final took their toll. The AKS girls had ran themselves into the ground, working tirelessly in attack and defence. Unfortunately this was a step too far for AKS and the girls had to settle for a very creditable second place in Lancashire and a place in the North West Semi-Finals in March.
Throughout the tournament the girls were a credit to themselves and should be proud of their team performance. Congratulations to Jenny D, Annaleise H, Nia H, Hattie R, Ellie S, Hannah T, Ruby W, Mia W and Tara W for reaching the Regional Finals.
