The launch of the Youth Health Leaders programme in AKS proved to be a success; raising awareness on issues such mental health and sun safety impacted the school in a positive way and led on to further developments. Year 13 student, and aspiring dentist, Mohamed, set up a subsection primarily focusing on the hitting issue of oral hygiene and healthy eating.
Organised by Matron, an afternoon was arranged whereby an Oral Hygiene educator came into school and taught the health leaders about the basic science behind Oral Hygiene and how to keep a healthy mouth (diet, brushing etc.). Furthermore, they learnt how to deliver sessions effectively to groups of young students.
After in-depth research and lesson planning, Mohamed, along with fellow student Oscar, delivered the session to Mr Rice and Mrs Bleasdale bright and lively classes in Year 2.
With some help from ‘Peter the Pug’ they were able to deliver some important messages across to the pupils, by learning how to brush Peter’s effectively. The session was also linked into Year 2’s current Science topic of healthy eating, with students deciding ‘Peter the Pugs’ healthy nutritious meal for the evening. The lively session seemed to captivate the interest of all the students, with very positive responses during the activity session.
We would like to thank Matron for helping us organise these sessions and bringing experts in to help us learn about these topics ourselves, and also thank Mr Rice for allowing us to teach our session to his excellent group!
