AKS Lytham students are celebrating today with an impressive year of A level results and a record number of students gaining unconditional offers from their universities of choice, with others going on to apprenticeships or joining the world of work.
11 students achieved straight A*/A grades including: Head Girl, Elizabeth Drinkwater (A*A*A*) who is moving on to read medicine at Edinburgh University; Benjamin Webster (A*A*A*) who will embark on a degree in dental surgery at Liverpool; and Jimmy Chen (A*A*A*) who will be reading mathematics at Warwick University.
A high proportion of students have gained places on courses at their first choice of university with a 100% success rate in applications for medicine, dentistry and all other competitive courses. Alicia Weaver (A*A*A) will be reading medicine at Keele, Annabelle Li Kam Wa (A*AA) reading medicine at King’s College London, John Sanderson (AAA) reading chemistry at York, Alyx Cope (A*AA) reading law at York and Alec Newman (A*AA) reading engineering at Lancaster.
Twin brothers and international biathletes, Samuel (A*A*A) and Thomas (A*A*A*) Matthews, regular Fylde Sharks volunteers, are going on to study dentistry at Manchester and mathematics at Warwick respectively. Samuel said, “I am blown away with my results and so thankful to the AKS teachers who have helped me to achieve all that I have whilst at school: the highlight being our visit to Buckingham Palace last year as national runners-up in the Tycoon in Schools business enterprise competition”.
Congratulations also to Ishwar Malhi (A*A*A) who joined AKS Sixth Form to further his ambitions in medicine and will now study medicine at Manchester. Ishwar said, “AKS has been a great place to study A levels, I’m delighted to have done so well and would like to thank my teachers for inspiring me and pushing me to do better than I ever thought I could”.
Head of Sixth Form, Phil Hayden said, “I am delighted that, yet again, AKS students have achieved such impressive results. This group of young people have worked incredibly hard and they thoroughly deserve their success. It’s great to see so many of them get into their university of choice and the breadth of careers and courses they have chosen highlights the wide variety of specialism and interests they have. Whilst it is great to see so many students take up places at top universities to read subjects such as medicine, dentistry, teaching, economics, mathematics and law; it is also fantastic to see a number of our students pursuing their passion for other subjects such as acting, music, journalism, film and criminology.
This breadth of interests is no surprise and reflects the wide range of activities that they have undertaken over the last two years including: volunteering, ‘Tycoons in School’, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, Round Square, the EPQ and countless sporting, musical and cultural opportunities. This breadth of experience means that they have developed into a most impressive year group who have worked with commitment, independence and compassion for others. I have no doubt that it is these qualities, alongside their notable academic achievements, which will allow them to thrive in their chosen courses and careers. We are all delighted by their success”.
Headmaster Mike Walton added, “One of the many joys of this job is seeing students reap the rewards of their hard work and seeing new doors open as they move on from AKS. The individual pathways that we have encouraged now take off in so many different directions. I am proud of all our students; who have met their academic ambitions, whatever their grades. They all leave with a wealth of other achievements and personal qualities; empowered and caring young people, not only of success, but of value too. Whether university or employment, we wish them well and thank them for all they have done during their time in our school”.
