Learning

Key Stage 1

At Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7) the school seeks to provide a rich and stimulating environment designed both to fulfill the academic requirements of the National Curriculum, and to promote an environment where the children are encouraged to develop an awareness of their individual strengths and how to make use of them.

English, Mathematics and Science are taught by the class teacher, and the teacher concerned builds differentiation into the planning of each subject. Each class has a dedicated IT lesson using the latest portable devices. IT is taught by the class teacher as a cross-curricular subject. History, Geography and RE are taught within topics, each year following set topics that cover the requirements of the National Curriculum for that subject.

Throughout the Infants, some subjects are taught by specialist teachers and these may include French, music and PE. Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is taught by the class teacher and complements the work done with the Whole School through assemblies and focuses.

Key Stage 2

At Key Stage 2 the children continue to follow the requirements of the National Curriculum, but begin to experience a greater breadth of opportunity that goes beyond its confines. The added value of an AKS education ensures that all of our children foster a love of learning and develop a myriad of new skills that will prepare them for the challenge of the Senior School and beyond. We aim to bring out the very best in every child, both in and out of the classroom.

In addition to delivering the four core curriculum areas of maths, English, ICT and science, our children will enjoy timetabled lessons in the following subjects: geography, history, modern foreign languages (French), creative thinking skills, PE and games, music, art, drama, PSHE, design technology and RE. Some subjects are specialist taught and are taught in specially designed and resourced rooms either in the Junior School or as part of a visit to the Senior School. This means that our children not only get the very best but learn a lot more as a result.

All classrooms are kitted out with the very latest Promethean whiteboards, and teachers and teaching assistants receive bespoke training on how to use them on an annual basis.

Progress is carefully monitored using GL (Granada Learning) Assessments in maths and English, which are taken every September, from Reception year onwards. This not only allows us to benchmark and target set but also provides us with that all important value added data. Progress and effort are regularly reported back to our parents via parents evenings and written reports. Form Teachers are also available at any point in the school year to discuss individual progress. Children are also actively involved in assessing and evaluating their own progress and are encouraged to do so, via our assessment for learning programme, on a daily basis. AKS Junior School recognises those children who may need extra support to help them with the things they find difficult or to provide extra challenges and opportunities in the subjects at which they excel.

Our classroom based curriculum is supported and enhanced by trips and visitors. The children benefit greatly from trips to places as varied as The Grand Theatre, Cuerden Valley and the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. Annual residential trips in Britain or abroad, as well as a ski trip to France every other year, ensure that our children learn many skills that are simply not achievable in a classroom. Visitors to the school include authors, poets, musicians, scientists, drama companies and even a Viking!
